My Portfolio currency collage by Mark Wagner essay by Peter Spagnuolo |

Mark Wagner’s currency collage, meticulously crafted from thousands of scraps of deconstructed dollar bills, takes aim at the intersection of art and commerce, beauty and banality. Wagner’s collage work is exhibited and collected by museums, galleries, and private collections across the United States and abroad. His exhibition “My Portfolio” at The Pavel Zoubok Gallery (New York City, September 2007) coincided eerily with our plunge into economic crisis. This booklet marks the occasion, reproducing 25 of Wagner’s collages. Poet and scholar Peter Spagnuolo’s accompanying essay is an edifying and entertaining examination of commerce, art, and currency: “He’s cutting up money!--the act of a madman or the gesture of the professional provocateur; Wagner is both the wild-eyed anarchist in the temple of capital and the worshipful mystic who shows us the meaning we took for granted, hidden in plain sight.” 9 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches, 16 page color pamphlet ships folded. |
